Basic Copyedit (One round of editing = 2¢ per word)

The Basic Copyedit is ideal for authors who want minimal editorial input on the structure and style of their manuscripts. During the one-round editing process, your editor will polish away any grammatical glitches, leaving you with a clean, error-free document.

How It Works

  • Your editor will have the copyedited manuscript back to you within 20 business days (about four weeks) from the date that you upload the manuscript to the Author Center. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.
  • All edits will be made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, giving you the option to accept or reject each change. Read more about using Track Changes.

What We’ll Do*

  • Fix typographical errors and inconsistencies
  • Correct errors in sentence structure and word usage
  • Highlight content that may require permission from a third party, including but not limited to song lyrics, photos, illustrations, poems, newspaper articles, and text
  • Correct errors in commonly known facts (e.g. “Steve Jobes, best known as the CEO of Microsoft” would be changed to “Steve Jobs, best known as the CEO of Apple”)

*What We Don’t Do in a Basic Copyedit

  • Restructure sentences, paragraphs, or chapters
  • Alter word choices, with the exception of misspellings or word misuse
  • Provide developmental suggestions or queries
  • Edit the revised draft of your manuscript. If you would prefer to have two rounds of editing, the Comprehensive Edit is the better choice.
  • Secure permissions for previously published material, including but not limited to song lyrics, photos, illustrations, poems, newspaper articles, and text. It is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the copyright holder.

Comprehensive Edit (Two rounds of editing = a total of 3.5¢ per word)

The Comprehensive Edit is the perfect choice for authors who want an in-depth review of their work. As part of this two-round editing process, your editor will review the manuscript for grammatical errors as well as offer input on the manuscript's overall structure, style, narrative voice, and arc.

How It Works

  • The editor will have the first round of editing completed within 20 business days (about four weeks) from when you upload the manuscript to the Author Center. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.
  • Once you download the edited manuscript, you will indicate your preferred date and time for a telephone consultation. This 30-minute call between you and your editor can be used to discuss any questions or concerns you have regarding the editor’s feedback, or to outline your plans for revision.
  • Once you have made your revisions, you will upload the revised manuscript to the Author Center. Your editor will have the edited, revised manuscript uploaded to the Author Center within 10 business days (two weeks).
  • All edits will be made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, giving you the option to accept or reject each change. Read more about using Track Changes.

What We’ll Do**

ROUND 1

  • Copyedit the manuscript as outlined in the Basic Copyedit service
  • Offer developmental feedback designed to improve the clarity, arc, and soundness of your book’s thesis (in the case of nonfiction); or the characterization, dialogue, and plot development of the manuscript (in the case of fiction)
  • Highlight text that is erroneous, repetitive, or extraneous
  • Conduct a 30-minute telephone consultation with you following the first edit to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding the editorial feedback. You can choose to schedule this call before beginning the revision process, or wait until after you’ve completed the second draft (but before uploading for the second round of editing).

ROUND 2

  • Eliminate any remaining typographical errors or inconsistencies in the revised manuscript

**What We Don’t Do in a Comprehensive Edit

  • Fact-check the manuscript
  • Edit your revisions in response to the second edit. Any errors incorporated into the manuscript after you have approved the editor’s revisions will remain in the final manuscript.
  • Secure permissions for previously published material, including but not limited to song lyrics, photos, illustrations, poems, newspaper articles, and text. It is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the copyright holder.

Manuscript Mini-Evaluation ($249)

Even if you’ve only completed a few chapters, the right feedback could catapult your book to greater heights. A manuscript mini-evaluation will provide direction and help you produce your best book. One of our in-house editors will read and evaluate your first chapter and give in-depth feedback on what works—and what could use a little TLC.

How It Works

  • After you upload the first chapter of your manuscript—up to 5,000 words, your editor/evaluator will have 10 business days (about two weeks) to read through the chapter and draft an evaluation letter.

What We’ll Do

  • Your editor will give you notes on aspects such as character development (for fiction) or structure (for nonfiction) for you to think about as you continue working on your manuscript. Your mini-evaluation may also include an overview of grammatical errors or formatting glitches.

Back Cover Copy ($199)

We know how difficult it can be to write effective copy for the back of your book—and how important it is to your book’s success. (After all, this is often also used as online marketing copy.) Our experienced team can craft copy for you, saving you the hassle and headache, while giving you a head start in the race toward sales.

How It Works

  • Once you purchase this service, you'll be prompted to upload your manuscript, your book's synopsis and target audience, and your author biography.
  • Your Back Cover Copy writer will read through your work to draft suggestions for a catchy one-sentence sales handle and will draft a professional book description and/or author biography, up to 2,000 characters total (the typical length of text that fits on the back cover of a paperback book).
  • Your editor will upload the suggested back cover copy for your review and use within 10 business days (about two weeks) of receiving your materials.
  • You will have the opportunity to further revise this copy to perfectly suit your work.

What We’ll Do

  • Provide a thorough review of your book, your author biography (if included), and any endorsements you may have secured
  • Write a professional synopsis and sales handle that can be used later on your back cover, on your website, and in any future marketing materials
  • Give suggestions on how to tailor your author biography to better sell your book
