Basic Copyedit (One round of editing = 3.5¢ per word)
The Basic Copyedit is ideal for authors who want minimal editorial input on the structure and style of their manuscripts. During the one-round editing process, your editor will polish away any grammatical glitches, leaving you with a clean, error-free document.
How It Works
- Your editor will have the copyedited manuscript back to you within 20 business days (about four weeks) from the date that you upload the manuscript to the Author Center. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.
- All edits will be made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, giving you the option to accept or reject each change. Read more about using Track Changes.
What We’ll Do*
- Fix typographical errors and inconsistencies
- Correct errors in sentence structure and word usage
- Highlight content that may require permission from a third party, including but not limited to song lyrics, photos, illustrations, poems, newspaper articles, and text
- Correct errors in commonly known facts (e.g. “Steve Jobes, best known as the CEO of Microsoft” would be changed to “Steve Jobs, best known as the CEO of Apple”)

*What We Don’t Do in a Basic Copyedit
- Restructure sentences, paragraphs, or chapters
- Alter word choices, with the exception of misspellings or word misuse
- Provide developmental suggestions or queries
- Edit the revised draft of your manuscript. If you would prefer to have two rounds of editing, the Comprehensive Edit is the better choice.
- Secure permissions for previously published material, including but not limited to song lyrics, photos, illustrations, poems, newspaper articles, and text. It is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the copyright holder.
Comprehensive Edit (One round of editing = a total of 6.5¢ per word)
The Comprehensive Edit is the perfect choice for authors who want an in-depth review of their work. As part of this editing process, your editor will review the manuscript for grammatical errors as well as offer input on the manuscript's overall structure, style, narrative voice, and arc.
How It Works
- The editor will have editing completed within 30 business days (about six weeks) from when you upload the manuscript to the Author Center. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.
- Once you download the edited manuscript, you will indicate your preferred date and time for a telephone consultation. This 30-minute call between you and your editor can be used to discuss any questions or concerns you have regarding the editor’s feedback, or to outline your plans for revision.
- Once you have made your revisions, you will upload the revised manuscript to the Author Center. Your editor will have the edited, revised manuscript uploaded to the Author Center within 10 business days (two weeks).
- All edits will be made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, giving you the option to accept or reject each change.
What We’ll Do**
- Copyedit the manuscript as outlined in the Basic Copyedit service
- Offer developmental feedback designed to improve the clarity, arc, and soundness of your book’s thesis (in the case of nonfiction); or the characterization, dialogue, and plot development of the manuscript (in the case of fiction)
- Highlight text that is erroneous, repetitive, or extraneous
- Conduct a 30-minute telephone consultation with you following the first edit to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding the editorial feedback. You can choose to schedule this call before beginning the revision process, or wait until after you’ve completed the second draft (but before uploading for the second round of editing).

- Edit your revisions in response to the second edit. Any errors incorporated into the manuscript after you have approved the editor’s revisions will remain in the final manuscript.
- Secure permissions for previously published material, including but not limited to song lyrics, photos, illustrations, poems, newspaper articles, and text. It is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the copyright holder.
